Dance Your Way Fit: Zumba

Zumba is a dance fitness program that was created by Colombian dancer and choreographer, Alberto "Beto" Perez, in the 1990s. The story goes that one day, Beto forgot his traditional aerobics music for a class he was teaching, so he used his personal music collection, which included Latin dance music like salsa and merengue. This impromptu class was a huge success, and Beto realized he had stumbled upon a new way to get people excited about fitness.

In 2001, Beto brought Zumba to the United States and teamed up with entrepreneurs Alberto Perlman and Alberto Aghion to create Zumba Fitness, LLC. The company began offering instructor trainings and licensing agreements, allowing fitness professionals to teach Zumba classes in gyms and studios around the world.

Zumba quickly gained popularity, particularly among women who enjoyed the fun and social aspect of the classes, as well as the calorie-burning workout. By 2012, Zumba Fitness had over 14 million participants in 150 countries.

Today, Zumba continues to evolve and expand, with new music and dance styles being incorporated into classes. The program has also expanded to include specialized classes like Zumba Gold (designed for seniors) and Zumba Kids (for children).
