Comfort Food - Pizza!

Pizza is a popular dish that originated in Italy and has become a beloved food around the world. The history of pizza can be traced back to ancient civilizations such as Greece, Rome, and Egypt, where flatbreads were a staple food.

The modern pizza as we know it today, however, can be traced back to Naples, Italy in the 18th century. At this time, pizza was a simple dish made with a flatbread base, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese, known as the Margherita pizza. The pizza was named after Queen Margherita of Savoy, who was said to have been a fan of the dish.

In the early 20th century, Italian immigrants brought pizza to the United States, where it quickly gained popularity. The first pizzeria in America, Lombardi's, opened in New York City in 1905 and is still in operation today.

Over the years, pizza has evolved and taken on different regional variations. In Chicago, for example, deep-dish pizza is a popular style that features a thick, buttery crust and is filled with cheese and toppings. In California, a thin crust pizza topped with non-traditional ingredients like barbecue chicken or goat cheese is popular.

Today, pizza remains one of the most popular foods in the world, enjoyed by millions of people of all ages and backgrounds.

Pizza is a delicious and versatile dish that can be made in many different ways. Here is a simple recipe for making a basic Margherita pizza:

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. pizza dough

  • 1 cup tomato sauce

  • 8 oz. fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced

  • Fresh basil leaves

  • Salt and pepper

  • Olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F.

  2. Roll out your pizza dough on a floured surface until it's about 1/4 inch thick. You can also use a store-bought pizza crust if you prefer.

  3. Transfer the dough to a lightly greased pizza pan or baking sheet.

  4. Spread the tomato sauce over the pizza dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges.

  5. Top the sauce with the sliced mozzarella cheese.

  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Drizzle olive oil over the top of the pizza.

  8. Bake the pizza for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  9. Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.

  10. Sprinkle fresh basil leaves over the top of the pizza before slicing and serving.

You can also add your favorite toppings like sliced pepperoni, mushrooms, onions, or peppers to make your pizza more flavorful and unique.
